Empties – Skincare Edition

Other than my ‘skincare drawer’, I also have an ‘empties skincare drawer’, where I chuck all my used-up skincare stuff, letting it accumulate so that eventually, I can share my thoughts about them with the world. As much as I strive to use up all of my makeup and skincare stuff and try my best to make products work (that may be impossible when you get a concealer two shades darker than your skin tone), there are still those few products that I have to throw out or give away.  So for me to go through a product, it means that the stuff actually works.
So I was happily living in my little, organised bubble – getting new stuff from my “skincare drawer” and putting aside the empty ones in my “empties skincare drawer”, when my husband ever so annoyingly, burst it. He pointed out that he couldn’t find his razor and nose-trimmer, underneath all my junk (junk?! that stuff costs more than his electric toys combined), and insisted that he was going to throw them out if I don’t tackle the situation. Okay, so I admit that it was not my drawer in the first place, but I had to put my empties somewhere, and a drawer dedicated to male grooming sounded slightly extravagant, so I helped myself. Anyway, here is what has been lurking in that drawer:

1. Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer
This is a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser that adequately hydrates the skin. I wouldn’t say it is an intensely hydrating moisturiser, so I prefer to use it during the warmer months since I do need something stronger for my parched winter skin. Its active ingredients are coffee and ginseng; coffee is a rich source of antioxidants and also has brightening characteristics while ginseng helps with brightening as well as having anti-ageing properties. This is an all-around lovely moisturiser; it absorbs well into the skin creating a beautiful base for foundation and has got a delicious citrusy scent which awakens your senses, thus makes it ideal as a day-cream to chase away that morning fatigue.

2. Dermalogica C-12 Pure Bright Serum + Dermalogica Pure Night Moisturizer
The Powerbright TRx™ range byDermalogica aims to minimise hyperpigmentation, brightens the skin tone while improving overall skin health and texture. I don’t necessarily have hyperpigmentation; however, I do have scars from old spots, and my skin tone is quite uneven, so I invested in both the serum and the moisturiser and used them exclusively for a couple of months, and I am very pleased with the results. First of all, let me point out that both of these products come with a pump dispenser which makes life so much easier as I hate fiddling with tubs and spatulas at 11 pm – the time I typically do my skincare act. The serum has a lightweight, gel-like consistency that feels cooling on the skin when applied. It absorbs within seconds, so I can immediately put on the moisturiser which, contrarily, is a thick cream that takes slightly longer to dissolve into the skin.
After a week, I noticed the pigmentation from the old spots getting weaker, and my skin started looking more radiant, and by the time I’ve used them all up, I could barely even notice them. Repurchase? I definitely will, but perhaps not for a while because I do feel that this line targets more mature skin with complex issues like ageing spots and wrinkles. They were great products while they lasted and I don’t regret buying them, but for the price, I prefer to use other affordable brightening skincare.

3. Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub
I first got this as a small tube sample (I can never get on with sachet skincare samples) and fell in love with it immediately. It is a thick, gritty skin scrub that does a great job at exfoliating dead skin cells. I find it too harsh to be used on a daily basis, so I like to use it once or twice a week, mixed with a pump of the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel to make it less thick and more manageable to lather all over my face, but you can use any gel cleanser with it. I will have to replace this one immediately!

4. Guerlain Abeille Royale Youth Watery Oil
I am a sucker for luxury skincare – although they are not budget-friendly, I love to treat myself to high-end products once in a while. And Guerlain is the first brand I go to when I do feel like a treat! I’ve tried and love their Super Aqua-Serum and their Blanc De Perle skincare ranges. However, the Abeille Royale line was a first for me, and I have to admit that I am hooked on this exquisite serum and am eager to give the rest of this line a try! This serum is an ultra viscous oil that melts into the skin beautifully while leaving it feeling instantly hydrated and plumped. The Abeille Royale serum is infused with the natural repairing powers of the Black Bee honey and with Royal Jelly which is known for its numerous skin benefits including improving the appearance of wrinkles, improving skin elasticity and firmness, and controlling sebum production – in short, it is a godsend for mature, oily skin!

5. Payot Crème Purifiante Moisturizer
This moisturiser targets oily, blemish-prone skin – two skin characteristics I regrettably have. It has a weightless, fast-absorbing formula composed of AHA’s, as well as glycolic acid and zinc extract amongst others. The AHA’s help treat acne and improve acne scars, while the glycolic acid works on acne together with brightening the skin and blurring out fine lines. I noticed fewer breakouts while using this moisturiser, and my T-zone stayed oil-free for much longer, thanks to its zinc extract. However, I do have to point out that this is not a very hydrating moisturiser if dehydration is your primary concern.

6. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair
I’ve talked about this serum in my last blog post, so if you fancy finding out my thoughts about it, you can click here.  Spoiler alert: it’s all good!

7. Lancaster Skin Therapy Eye Cream
This may be the fifth repurchase of this eye-cream, which says a lot about what I think about it. I use this eye-cream as the final step in my skincare routine, and by the time I’ve reached this point, I am already bored of it all. However, I still make the last effort because I do believe that a pea-size (not pie-size – I am not going to repeat the same mistake I made in my chemistry class yonks ago), amount of this every night makes a noticeable difference. I have to use less concealer in the morning and I look much more awake, let’s just say that. And the fact that this cream comes in a squeezy little tube already gets five stars from me. It won’t be my last purchase for sure, but in the meantime, I am already testing out other alternatives.
