5 Winter Skincare Essentials

I hate winter. There, I’ve said it. Apologies if you disagree with me, but the short, gloomy wintry days always temper with my mood, and I hate when I have to cancel plans because the sky decides to open up. Not that we get the worst winters here in Malta; our winter mostly consists of sunny days and blue skies, but I still hate it.

And amongst the many things I don’t like about winter, it is that winter sucks up any moisture out of my skin and leaves it looking like a dry old raisin. My lips and especially my hands get dehydrated and chapped, but I do have a slight OCD with hand-washing, so that may account for the shrivelled palms. My knees and my elbows turn white and flaky, as if I spend my days up to my elbows in flour, kneading dough. Which is ridiculous because I haven’t kneaded dough in a decade – I prefer the practicality of the store-bought ones. So enough with the kneading, let’s get cracking with the five skincare essentials to survive the cold winter months.

Nivea Caring Lip Balm

This one has been a permanent staple in my skincare collection for years. It is a cheap, readily available lip-balm that does the job top-notch. I have quite a few of them dotted around the house, or stuffed into coat pockets or at the bottom of my bags because I like having them at hand. And if I can find one (they are so bitty, I always seem to lose them), I like to start my makeup routine by applying a quick layer of this lip balm so that by the time my makeup is ready, my lips are all nice and soft, ready for the designated lip colour of the day.

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum

This Estée Lauder serum is another cult favourite of mine. I’ve loved it since it launched some years ago, and I keep on repurchasing it. I use about three drops of this oil-free, lightweight serum at night before my moisturiser, and it helps to balance out my skin tone and brightens it. This serum comes with a nifty little pipette which helps you to avoid going overboard with the amount of product you use, which I am so guilty of doing.

Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream

Soon after I grabbed this Kiehls moisturiser off Feel Unique and was fretfully waiting for it to arrive, I found out that they have opened a shop in Valletta! I felt so defeated about this that I wanted to rush in and grab another one because Feel Unique orders always take forever to arrive!

So if you are familiar with my blog, you should know that I have the worst oily-skin situation because I go on all the time about it. But to make it worse, my skin is exceptionally dehydrated too, especially in winter. I do try to drink 2 litres of fluid a day, but when the weather is chilly, I don’t fancy any liquids. And the 1L of water I gulp while sweating my arse off on the treadmill, doesn’t count, does it? So this is where this small tub of face-cream comes in handy. It is a lightweight moisturiser that works by keeping a reasonable level of moisture within the skin for 24 hours which means that the skin always stays hydrated.  I love how quickly this cream absorbs into the skin, so there is no time lost before I can start applying my 101 layers of makeup (not literally, of course!).  And it is odourless too, so in case you disfavour scented skincare this one is for you!

The Body Shop Hand Cream

I’ve been obsessed with The Body Shop’s Moringa range since I was in high school. Over the years I’ve gone through bottles and tubes of their shower gels, body scrubs, and body mists. And very recently, they have stocked the full-size version of my favourite Moringa hand cream, which is brilliant. Although I do love the mini ones for popping in my handbag, they don’t last for very long, mainly because I use them constantly. This hand-cream not only smells fantastic, but is quickly absorbed into the skin, and makes them all soft and hydrated.  And if floral scents are not your thing, The Body Shop also do them in the strawberry, hemp, almond, British rose, and absinthe scents, so I’m quite sure you will find a favourite.

Payot Body Elixir

If you want a spa-like experience at home, this body scrub is a must-have.  This Payot Body Elixir contains golden sugar granules which when applied to dry skin gently exfoliate, then completely melt into the skin when moistened.  I love to apply this all over my body before getting in my bath or shower for the scrub effect, then when wet, gently massage it into my skin which turns into a lovely body balm before dissolving away. This body butter is enriched with golden sugar granules and jajoba oil which buff away old skin while intensely nourish the skin, leaving it feeling smooth and silken to the touch. It is also delicately scented with notes of myrrh and amyris which make the skin smell beautiful for a long time. In fact, I can still get a waft of it the next morning, and it makes me feel good about myself for the rest of the day. Definitely worth the investment!
